Students create a new page called Alcatraz on their online portfolio. Students write their response to the essential question: When does the government have the right to restrict the freedom of people? Students can share their responses in small groups and then transition into a group discussion.

Students create a sub-page called Academic Language under the Alcatraz page. Students rephrase the definition of each vocabulary word into their own words. Then they will create their own sentence using the word and find an image to represent each word.

Alcatraz Scavenger Hunt to Build Background Knowledge
The teacher puts Alcatraz photos with texts around the room. Each student receives a worksheet to help them complete the scavenger hunt. Students are encouraged to work on their own, but have the option to work with a partner if they need help. When students are complete, the class goes over the answers.
